Gutter FAQs
How long do gutters last?
Beyond material, installation quality and maintenance frequency play a major role. Gutters that are improperly pitched, inadequately fastened, or rarely cleaned tend to fail early regardless of material. A good rule of thumb: if your gutters are over 20 years old and showing consistent problems, replacement is likely more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
What is the best gutter type for my business?
The right gutter system for a commercial property comes down to three things: building type, roof configuration, and water volume. Here’s a quick guide by property type.
- Small commercial / retail: 6-inch seamless aluminum K-style gutters. Handles moderate volume, matches any exterior color, low maintenance. Add gutter guards if there’s nearby tree cover.
- Large commercial / warehouse: Box-style gutters, full stop. Built for the high water volume large roof spans produce. Galvanized steel or aluminum, oversized downspouts.
- Multi-family / apartment: Seamless aluminum, 5- or 6-inch K-style across all units. Gutter guards pay for themselves quickly by cutting cleaning labor across a large building.
- Mixed-use: Usually two systems: a finished K-style or half-round on the street-facing façade, box gutters or internal drainage on flat/rear sections.
What is the best gutter type for my home?
That said, the best choice depends on your specific home. Older homes with traditional architecture often look better with half-round gutters, which have a classic open-top profile that complements craftsman, Victorian, and colonial styles. Commercial buildings or homes with very steep or large roof surfaces may benefit from box-style gutters with higher capacity. During our inspection, we assess your roof pitch, drainage area, and aesthetic goals to recommend the profile and material that fit your property — not just the easiest option to install.

Should I add gutter guards?
How often should gutters be cleaned?
If your property has heavy tree coverage, particularly pine trees, which shed year-round, you may need quarterly cleaning. Homes with gutter guards can often extend that interval to once a year or less, depending on the guard type and tree density. During cleaning, it’s also worth checking that downspouts are flowing freely, hangers are secure, and there’s no standing water or visible sag in the channel. A clogged downspout can render a perfectly clean gutter completely ineffective.
